Abstract (english)
The article proposes a three-tier model for the analysis of cultural dynamics of a specific visual arts’ scene, based on data extracted from cultural periodicals and art criticism. The model is developed at the intersection of (digital) art history, sociology of art, social network analysis and relational sociology, and foregrounds some of the central actors of the art field, such as cultural periodicals, art critics, artists and cultural institutions. By way of using both quantitative and qualitative methods, the model revolves around the identification of different social circles that are simultaneously present in a specific art scene, highlighting the complexity of the observed phenomena. The model is flexible and can be adjusted to the study of cultural dynamics of different national and transnational spaces and different time periods.
Methods (english)
The dataset was originally constructed as part of a PhD research “Digital Art History and Artists’ Networks in Croatia in the 1990s and 2000s”. It includes data from four periodicals published in Croatia between 1991 and 2006 (Kontura, Arkzin, Vijenac, and Zarez). The first dataset included all of the periodical issues and authors of texts, while the second one included all of the art critics and the artists / cultural institutions they mentioned in art criticism. The data was used to construct bimodal network visualizations. The dataset included here represents a part of the original data – examples that were used in the article “Constructing a Critical Situation”. Both the mentioned PhD and article, give a more detailed explanation on how the dataset was constructed.
